Transition into Topography
1. Relate bathymetry to mapping on land
2. Introduce contour maps - notes on using/reading contour maps
3. Intro to Clay Contour Mapping activity - break into groups, sketch side view of model
Wednesday Feb 25th
Contour Maps
1. Clay Contour Mapping activity
- clay models in clear tupperware containers
- add colored water in intervals and trace the visible form from above on a transparency
- creates a contour map
2. Each group does a second contour map - write 5 differences between the two maps
3. Make one map a town
- name the town
- add features necessary for the town (roads, schools, grocery stores, etc). Create a legend.
- make sure features make sense with geography - no roads going straight up mountains or schools on the edge of a cliff
Thursday Feb 26th
Wickford Quandrangle
1. Preview into reading detailed topographic maps
- tie in yesterday's activity of making the contour maps into topographic maps
2. Read a topographic map of a local area (Wickford, RI) and answer questions about features, legends, etc.
Friday Feb 27th

1. Finish answering questions about the topographic map
2. Review the map as a class and answer student questions
